Good Food & Experiences from Soil to Plate

We are proud of our award-winning good food. Helping with meals and snacks is part of everyday life at Red Hen and we are lucky to have added experiences from soil to plate here in our extensive grounds and adjacent to the main kitchen. The children especially love harvesting, preparing and eating the produce they have helped to grow.

Our menus and recipes are online on the parents section. There are also some  videos of some of our recipes on our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayLFkmGx0I4

We are dedicated to sourcing local produce; as farmers ourselves we like to know where our meat has been reared and butchered and are lucky to be able to have included the meat from our own pigs and lambs in the past. We have some wonderful local suppliers including butcher, fishmonger and fruit & veg.

Whilst we are able to cater for special diets, we are keen to ensure children benefit from a balanced diet and will require evidence that professional pediatric nutritional advice is being obtained if parents request certain diets.

"Eating habits are not simply about food" (Sally Goddard Blythe 2005) Meal times at Red Hen are a happy social occasion with adults eating with their mixed aged groups helping them to appreciate good food and develop good table manners as well as the art of good conversation.

Red Hen is also knowledgeable about introducing solid food and offers support for parents through this phase, helping babies enjoy a wide reportoire of food flavours and textures during their first year of life and beyond. It is healthier to make things from scratch as we do at Red Hen and we also include our youngest Red Henners sitting at the table wth mixed ages in our family style mealtimes.

There are no processed foods at Red Hen or baby pouches which are known to be ultra-processed foods and therefore dcan have negative consequences to long-term health and eating habits.

Jane has a wealth of knowledge and experience to support parents feeding their children and is a long-standing judge for the Nursery World Food Award. If you would like any advce please do not hestate to contact her.

What they say about Red Hen
Nursery staff are warm, skilled and positive role models – both male and female. Always happy and bouncy – just what 3 year olds need! The setting allows children to ‘be’, learn through play and discovery with great resources, surroundings and community. Staff acknowledge developments, and ensure child and parents/wider family are considered as a whole and supported as such.
