Good Food & Experiences from Soil to Plate

We are proud of our award-winning good food and have won many accolades. Helping with meals and snacks is part of everyday life at Red Hen and we are lucky to have added experiences from soil to plate here in our extensive grounds. The children especially love harvesting, preparing and eating the produce they have helped to grow.

Please visit our you tube channel for videos of some of our recipes:

We are also dedicated to sourcing from local farmers and producers; as farmers ourselves we like to know where our meat has been reared and butchered and are lucky to be able to have included the meat from our own pigs and lambs in the past. Whilst we are able to cater for special diets, we are keen to ensure children benefit from a balanced diet and will require evidence that professional pediatric nutritional advice is being obtained if parents request certain diets.

"Eating habits are not simply about food" (Sally Goddard Blythe 2005) Meal times at Red Hen are a happy social occasion and mostly eaten outside in the summer months with adults eating with their mixed ages groups helping them to appreciate good food and develop good table manners as well as the art of good conversation.

Red Hen is also knowledgeable about weaning babies and offers support for parents through this phase, helping babies enjoy a wide reportoire of food flavours and textures during their first year of life and beyond.

Recipes from our menus are available on request and some are available on our website. We have now started youtube videos and aim to show how to prepare nutritious easy meals for children.

Jane keeps well-informed about children's dietary requirements attending national conferences about food and nutrition. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience to support parents feeding their children and  is a long-standing judge for the Nursery World Food Award.

What they say about Red Hen
We chose Red Hen because of the importance it places on children spending time outside, getting fresh air and exploring nature. Rhona’s social skills and creativity are nutured here too. She comes home tired, muddy and having had a great day.
