Donations of apples welcome - if you don't have your own apple trees, how about asking the neighbours, grandparents, etc if they have any apples that are going to waste? Windfalls are suitable as the apples do not have to be in pristine condition!

Please also bring a bottle to take some home (quantity allowing!)

Please join us for Breakfast!

Mums and kids missing out on breakfast

Research carried out for Farmhouse Breakfast Week shows that hundreds of thousands of children across the country are missing breakfast as a quarter of parents admit to not ensuring their children eat a proper morning meal.  Mums are also neglecting their own health with 42% of them skipping breakfast at least once a week.

Dietician Nigel Denby said: "Mornings are hectic for everyone but it is worrying that so many parents and children are missing out on this important meal.  Eating breakfast improves concentration, mood and energy levels and many breakfast foods provide important nutrients which cannot be made up later in the day."

New Year Resolution?

After-all, you all put the correct fuel in your cars; there is no reason why you not should give your child good nutritous food to fuel their growing bodies and brains.

Please see our resources page for recommended information or drop into the office for advice.

Watch this space for upcoming workshops at Red Hen!

Nativity NEW DATE

Nativity on 18th December at 4.15pm. Please be dressed for the weather!

PARKING WILL BE IN THE YARD SO PLEASE BRING A TORCH AND WEAR WELLIES.
Any Kindergarten children who are not normally here on a Tuesday, need to be at Red Hen for 1.00pm or 2.30 at the latest.

Names to Kindergarten staff please, places are limited to family members (we have 38 children performing so please do not include all your distant relatives!) Hot punch will be served to keep you warm while you wait. Please also join in with some carol singing.
Sorry, NO CAMERAS. This is because the Nativity is performed when it is dark and flashes are very off-putting for the children.

This year we are paying for a professional photographer and we will be selling DVDs at cost to recover our costs.

We assume all parents are happy to have their child photographed and for us to use the photos, if not please see Julie now.

Once again, we thank Mike for coming along with his guitar and amplifier.

The performance will be brief as appropriate for 3 and 4 year olds! The children will return to their room for derobing afterwards. please wait in the outdoor area for them to be ushered out to  you afterwards.

Many thanks, we hope you all enjoy it!

BBC Food and Farming Awards

We were in the final 3 out of 300 entrants for the national award for Caterer of the year! Julie and Jane were also very excited to meet Adam Henson from BBC's 'Countryfile' and the world famous chef, Raymond Blanc. However, the best thing of all was to discover how many food professionals from all over the country had heard about Red Hen and our ethos. What an achievement for our little nursery from Lincolnshire!

Professional Development

We heard from emiment leaders and researchers (Claire Warden, Prof. Cathy Nutbrown, Dr. Kathy Gooch, dr Sacha Powell and Prof. Lillian Katz) in the Early Years Profession talking about Baby Care, Professional Development and attended workshops too. Despite the long day (having had to get up at 5am!) we were all buzzing with inspiration and knowledge to help us all at Red Hen.

We learnt more about the importance of positive experiences in the early years;-

What Nutbrown said:-

"The quality of children's early education influences their achievements and learning in later years"

"The best way to help children be ready to be 5 is to let them be 3 at 3, 2 at 2, and so on..."

"Wisdom begins with wonder" as Socrates said.

"Real learning happens when you know something so well you can play with it"

"Parents lay the foundations of who children are and what they will become"

"They need infant appropriate pedagogies....... and breadth and balance"

Lillian Katz - "Reach and teach them"   "Don't squash their fun and excitement"

interesting article that supports our philosophy at Red Hen....

"While child-centred parenting has been the norm for the past couple of decades, new research suggests that if we want to raise confident, well-adjusted, healthy children our style of parenting has to change. Forget the “helicopter parent” (who hovers continually over their offspring), the “lawnmower parent” (who tries to mow down all obstacles in their children’s path) or the “tiger mother” (a parent who hothouses her children to succeed academically, named after the bestselling memoir by Amy Chua). We should now be learning how to be “underparents” .

CPD for teachers at Red Hen

The transition to school is an important time for children and parents. We are proud to give the children a broad range of skills that will help them at school, in addition, at Red Hen we devote a great deal of time going the extra mile to help make the move to school as smooth as possible. Part of this is to hold 'meet the school' and 'planning for school' meetings in September with another at Easter time when schools have been allocated.

Hay is made at Red Hen!

One of the children thought the baler twine on the bale looked like a guitar string, so Andrea instigated some singing around the haybales! It is always exciting when the children make connections in their learning!

Leavers Adventure

Although we are sorry that the children are leaving us, we are proud to have been part of their early years - they will always carry with them a part of Red Hen and will be able to recall many happy memories and skills to link to their future learning.

Students

Jane stressed the importance of studying to gain knowledge about the early years and encouraged the students to continue in their professional development stating that those who work with children never stop learning! Students were encouraged to think about which past theoristics could be applicable to the practice at Red Hen. They all toured the setting, observing and engaging in the enabling environment and thinking about how children benefit from this environment. Including holding chicks in the paddock area, frogs by the ponds and tasting some of the delicious redcurrants from the garden.

Jane Speaking in London - again!

Jane was honoured to have been asked to speak at 'Early Years 2012' conference in Queen Elizabeth 11 Conference Hall, London on 19th June alongside very influential Early Years Experts, including Ministers, Dames, Professors and consultants. She was priviledged to deliver her presentation in The Abbey Room which overlooked Westminster Abbey main entrance - awesome!

She has now been asked to deliver a talk at A Public Policy Exchange Symposium Event in Central London. However the date clashes with the Olympic Torch event at Red Hen. Although gutted to miss this, whe is excited to once again be at the forefront of all that is good for early years care and edducation. Thanks to the competent team at Red Hen for keeping things running smoothly!
